Deeper Roots Coffee

ABOUT

Deeper Roots Coffee brings ethically sourced, carefully roasted and artfully prepared coffees to Cincinnati’s historic Findlay Market.

The vision for Deeper Roots Coffee all started in 2003 with the formation of Rohs Street Cafe, a local cafe in Cincinnati, OH. The cafe became known for their drive to improve coffee quality and built a name in the city as a great third place that served a delicious cup of coffee & espresso. Eventually, the focus on quality lead Deeper Roots Coffee to an origin visit, and thus started the importing-relationship of an Antiguan coffee from Guatemala, as well as development work with a local group of farmers.

In 2010, the Espresso Guild, a non-profit here in Cincinnati, was born out of the desire to do more behind the scenes with consulting, machine sales & maintenance, training, research & development, and continued working with farmers in Guatemala to improve their products and quality of life. The Guild became a regionally recognized name in barista training and they used that time to invest in more of their own coffee education, barista competitions, and leading educational origin trips.

More and more investment into the farmer development side of things birthed Deeper Roots Development - a non-profit created to serve coffee farmer development in a more direct and tangible way. Through DRD their coffee farmers in Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala were completely processing all of their coffee by the 2014 harvest season. From bringing back 5lbs of green coffee at a time in their suitcases in 2005, to enabling their farmers all the way to owning their own processing facility has been a long, but rewarding journey and they grow in excitement each season as they begin to strategize how they can repeat this model with other countries.

Deeper Roots Coffee was officially launched in 2012 as a for-profit business, created to bring all of their talents, experiences, and knowledge of the coffee under one roof in order to scale and have the most impact on the industry as possible. They started roasting out of a desire to directly influence the quality of the coffees they want to showcase. they’ve also continued to scale their training, maintenance, and equipment services as the wholesale side of their business grows.

They believe that people return to what is good, and they strive to be good for the people.
