Laying the Foundation

Laying the Foundation, a multimedia storytelling project spearheaded by Asa Featherstone, IV, chronicling Black shoppers' impact on Findlay Market over the years.

Through honest portraits, interviews, and archives, it highlights the deep impact Black communities have had on the market— past, present, and future. This project is about visibility, truth, and reclaiming space in a city shaped by gentrification and change.

This film has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.

Building Histories

In partnership with local historian, Alyssa McClanahan, we dove deep into the history of 31 buildings in the Market District to bring you these stories. Each one covers the ownership over time, the businesses and families housed, and the damages and renovations these buildings endured since their founding. Some of these buildings you’ll recognize, while others you may have walked past hundreds of times without noticing. Click below to read the stories of over two dozen historical building surrounding Findlay Market.

Thank you to our partners Ohio HumanitiesAmerica 250-Ohio for making this project possible.
