BanaSun Smoothie Bar
Michael Kroeger, Founding Owner of BanaSun Smoothie Bar
Michael Kroeger’s passion for healthy smoothies was born years ago after he noticed his health declining to the point where he knew he had to make changes. Wanting to become the best version of himself physically and mentally, Michael tried a variety of diets, but the one that stuck with him was fruit smoothies made with natural ingredients. He explored various recipes using trial and error and soon began sharing his recipes with other people. From there, the idea of starting a business flourished.
In 2016, Michael set up his mobile cart pulled by a bicycle as part of the Outdoor Market at Findlay Market. A few months later, he became an official Findlay Kitchen Member. He tells us that Findlay Kitchen offered mentorship and guidance through any problems he encountered. From there, Michael and his team began participating in large outdoor events to grow their exposure further.
In the summer of 2019, BanaSun Smoothie Bar officially opened its doors on Race Street. Michael tells us that the Findlay Market District is a really fun area to start your business. “You get to meet and connect with many people with similar goals in food entrepreneurship,” says Michael. “I love the culture here and interacting with all the vendors and customers.”
Unlike other businesses, Michael prides BanaSun on being people-driven rather than product-driven. He tells us that his goal is to take care of everyone who walks in the door so that they have a great experience. “We have different levels of customers coming in. We have the healthy-minded fanatics who get excited that we don’t put in any additives or fake ingredients, just pure, natural smoothies,” Michael begins. “On the other hand, we have customers who have never had a smoothie before, but we welcome them in and they become regulars.”
Michael’s relationship with his customers is important, but he also believes it’s essential to take care of the people who care for the customers – his team. Michael thrives on collaborating with his team to create strong bonds and improve their abilities. They often do team-building exercises to help them work together as a unified force. “I think society gets so lost in putting happiness into the future, but I try to focus on how we can have as much fun and happiness right where we are now,” says Michael.
Michael has big aspirations for the future, including sponsoring the Olympics, opening a 2nd storefront location, and getting into wholesale, but at the moment, he’s enjoying where he is now.
Michael’s favorite smoothie is the Island Greens, made with kale, peanut butter, dates, coconut, and coconut milk. It creates a beautiful green color full of flavors, and it is the perfect smoothie to enjoy on a warm sunny day. Next time you are at Findlay Market, stop at BanaSun Smoothie Bar to try the Island Greens or explore the other delicious, nutrient-filled smoothies and bowls on the menu!
